oh my god, that fucking tagline. “watch films, not movies. there’s a difference.” OKAY, NOW I’M PISSED.

guess what, guys: there is nothing wrong with cliché. there is nothing fucking wrong with tropes and homages and OH MY GOD, EVERYTHING HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE IN SOME RESPECT, AS LONG AS YOU ENJOY IT WHO EVEN CARES. i am way too tired to actually get super in-depth with this but if tumblr user glitterandgrit has time later, i’m gonna pass the reins to her, because someone needs to address this.

also dang, that horror one feels really dismissive of the entire genre as a whole, and that makes me even madder, because THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH GENRE FILMS. (and they are films, oh my god, who said only ~worthy~ things get to use that word, shut the fuck up.) there is nothing inherently lesser about horror, or fantasy, or sci-fi, or action or fucking anything. i am rapidly losing coherence but asdfkjld SHUT UP YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!

lolllll, I feel I have little of value to add here that Sara hasn’t written, but I will say that ~film~ elitism is especially bullshit as a thing because NOT EVERY ~FILM~ SERVES THE SAME PURPOSE OR SEEKS TO EVOKE THE SAME REACTION FROM ITS AUDIENCE. Plus, I’ll often bemoan lack of creativity in certain ~films~ because they use cliches badly; a lot of my favorite ~films~ are ones I love because I adore genre and how it functions and seeing how the movie plays with it and goes out of its way to honor The Rules while remaining engaging and effective (and, frequently, how it brutally twists The Rules around at the last second. HI SCREAM HI ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE HI).

And, you know, sometimes I just really wanna watch Sarah Connor crush a robot’s skull for the sheer FUCK YEAH of it, not because I’m under the impression that the Terminator movies are bereft of cliche (lololol) and therefore inherently more valid than other ~films~. DANG, Y’ALL, ISN’T SARAH CONNOR AWESOME? (The answer: of fucking course she is, and loving those ~films~ for that reason alone would be perfectly valid for anyone to do. SAME GOES FOR PRETTY MUCH ALL CINEMA THAT PEOPLE LOVE FOR REASONS HAVING NOTHING TO DO WITH NONSENSICAL STANDARDS RE: WHAT MAKES A ~FILM~ A ~FILM~.)
